I was the only person in Shollenberger Park at sunset. A park consisting of 7 miles of trails located at the southern most edge of Petaluma, a town nestled in the North Bay off the 101 corridor; Technically trespassing saved only by California’s ‘Right to Pass’ laws. The <2MP camera fails to capture the scope of the moons illumination off the Schollenberger reservoir. When beheld I truly did laugh – what a rare thing to see in this modern age!
Right now I’m physically bound to the San Francisco Bay Area but by using the Levar Burton Reading Rainbow Method my mind can take me anywhere. The fog and its’ thick banks took my mind to London and it was a splendid trip! The lack of security checkpoints and overzealous TSA agents coming and going made the return all the more sweet.

- spectobarathrum fatagravure plate
“A Scottish adventurer, inventor, and photographer named Neville Colmore claimed to have constructed a device capable of “…parting the veil of Faery…“. The device, which he called the”Spectobarathrum“, produced beautiful photographic plates he called “fatagravures“, through a now lost process. The original “Spectobarathrum” along with all of the images he claimed to have made were believed destroyed in a fire. This fatagravure plate was taken from Neville Colmore’s Spectobarathrum after the tragic fire. It is the last known portrait of the famed fataologist and photographic pioneer. It is not known if it is a self portrait or if it was taken by an assistant.”
The photograph is so striking. His hair, demeanor, and expression seem so otherworldly. Almost caricaturish; as if he was in costume for the theatre and not in his- assumably- everyday attire. Over the years I’ve collected many vintage and antique photographs from various sources and from all around the world (always trying to be as accurate as possible when organizing them by year or decade taken) yet this one- amongst a few others- has endured well in my mind. By standing out above many others as a favorite it seemed like a matter of course to use as basis for a wallpaper!
Oakland onwards to Austin, Texas!
For a long time I have been unable to play with analog mediums much to my own chagrin and artistic detriment. My hope is to be able to return to them with some regularity soon and, with some sort of luck, this last weekend presented the opportunity to reinfatuate myself with the process to fulfill that need. The sort of need characterized by zoning out with a pen, hunched over a piece of paper teetering atop my lap, itself upon a large softcover bound file serving as a drawing surface. The sort persistent enough to blow off duties of very high importance (ones I continue to neglect). So I did. Having done so did much to ameliorate the stressors experienced at the time.
While nothing spectacular I enjoyed the processes’ result. The scribbles in the top-left resulted after my hand cramped but the need to play remained.

I often don’t know what to think of Hipstamatic as a medium therefore I present these prints without context. Whether or not they ‘work’ is, as we all understand, entirely up to the viewer. What do you think: Is Hipstamatic a valid medium for photography?
My favorite part of compiling any mixtape or mixCD was the creation of its jacket art. Trying to capture the tone or theme of any mix was almost a greater joy then giving it away to a person who might one day gaze upon it with regret, disdain or some mixture of kinship and joy long after our paths have branched off as they often do. Even if the mix was for my personal playing pleasure I would set aside the time to labor on its jacket for hours. For the longest time the purely-digital playlist seemed like a lifeless facsimile of its analog and digital cousins due to the lack of this precious superfluity.
Once again having the privilege to enjoy my music collection and its playlists I was inspired to bring this relic into the digital equivalent thus inspiring this inaugural post at ArtOfSF. These Bedeviling Days Are Vibrant Splendors is a set of three, 13 song, digital-mixtapes from 2008. Almost as vividly as a snapshot they have captured the essence of the time. These covers below come as close as they can having upon each one photography from two photo shoots; one from 2007 and another from 2008.
Photograph of bike wheel and fork was of my addition to an Albany Bulb installation consisting of many different similar combination’s mounted on steel jutting from crushed concrete.
